How it works

Three steps from petrol bill to sunshine.

  1. Step 1

    Pick your car

Three new BYD electric cars, from a city hatch to a premium SUV. Not sure? We help you choose.

  2. Step 2

    We check your roof

An accredited installer looks at your roof, your DB board and where the car parks. You get a written quote before anything is signed.

  3. Step 3

    One monthly price

Car finance and solar finance side by side, on one page. The car is delivered and the system goes in. From then on, the sun fills it.

Who it suits

Home in the day? The sun fills your car.

Out at work all day? It still helps: the panels cut your home electricity bill, and you charge at night. We will tell you straight which one you are.

Already have solar? Most load-shedding systems were built for backup, not a car. Usually a few more panels and a smart charger close the gap, for far less than a new system.

  • A woman on a video call at her home office desk, with her electric car charging outside the window

    You work from home

The car sits in the driveway all day, exactly when the panels are working.

  • A retired couple unloading groceries from their electric car, charging in a face-brick carport with solar panels

    You are retired

Short trips, home most of the day, and no more watching the petrol price every month.

  • A mother walking her children home from school past their electric car charging at the garage wall

    It is the second car

The school-run and shopping car is usually home by lunchtime. Perfect for the sun.

  • A lit garage during load shedding with an inverter, battery and wall charger, and an electric car plugged in

    You want backup anyway

The battery keeps the lights, Wi-Fi and fridge on when the power goes out.

Straight talk

When an EV is not for you.

We would rather lose the sale than sell you the wrong car. If any of these is you, do not buy one yet.

  • You rent and want the solar

Solar goes on a roof you own, so the bundle is not for renters. The car can still work: many landlords allow a wall charger if you restore the wall when you move. Ask us about the car on its own.

  • There is nowhere to charge at home

Parking in the street or a shared complex bay? You would live on public chargers. That gets old, fast.

  • You barely drive

Under 500 km a month is about R1 134 in petrol. The saving will not cover a new car payment. Keep what you have.

  • The monthly would stretch you

If the instalment only works on paper, walk away. A car should not cost you sleep.

Four more reasons to wait
  • Your car is paid off and runs fine

The cheapest car is the one you already own. Drive it into the ground, then come back.

  • You do Durban to Joburg every week

Long highway runs mean charging stops and planning. Doable, but a frequent long-distance driver should think hard first.

  • You tow a caravan or boat

Towing eats range. If the trailer goes on most trips, an EV is not your friend yet.

  • You need a bakkie for work

Electric bakkies are still rare and pricey here. Do not force an SUV to do a bakkie’s job.

None of that sounds like you? Then you are exactly who this is for. Check my home

Straight answers

Questions people ask.

Can solar panels really charge an electric car in South Africa?+

Yes, when the car is home while the sun is up. About 7 kWp of panels makes roughly 28 kWh on an average South African day, and 80 km of driving needs about 15 kWh. A smart charger that only uses spare solar fills the car between about 10am and 2pm, so the driving costs you close to nothing.

Who is Run on sunshine for?+

People whose car is at home during the day: anyone who works from home, retired people, and households where it is the second car that does the school run and shopping. If your car is at work all day, the panels still cut your home electricity bill, but you would charge at night from the grid.

Who should not buy an electric car?+

Do not buy the solar bundle if you rent, because solar goes on a roof you own (the car alone can still work if your landlord allows a wall charger). Do not buy an EV yet if you have nowhere to charge at home, drive under about 500 km a month, have a paid-off car that runs fine, drive long distances every week, tow a caravan or boat on most trips, need a bakkie for work, or if the monthly payment would stretch you. We would rather lose the sale than sell you the wrong car.

What is in the solar system?+

About 7 kWp of Tier 1 panels (13 x 550 W), an 8 kW single-phase hybrid inverter (Deye or Sunsynk class), a 5 kWh lithium LFP battery for backup during power cuts, and a 7 kW smart car charger that charges from spare solar. Installed, with the electrical certificate of compliance and municipal registration, from R120 000.

How is the monthly price worked out?+

The car is financed over 72 months at 11.75% (prime plus one) with a 10% deposit and no balloon, unless the car maker offers its own finance. The solar system is financed over 72 months with no deposit, adding about R2 330 a month. Your own rate depends on your credit record, and the final price is confirmed in your written quote.

What is a balloon payment?+

A lump sum still owed at the end of the finance contract. It lowers the monthly instalment but not the price. Our bundle prices use no balloon, so nothing is owed at the end.

I already have solar. Can it charge a car?+

Sometimes, but most systems installed for load shedding were sized for backup, not for a car: a 5 kW inverter, a big battery and too few panels. Usually a few more panels and a smart charger close the gap for far less than a new system. Tell us what you have and an installer checks it.

What about load shedding?+

The battery keeps your lights, Wi-Fi and fridge on during an outage. The car is not charged from the battery, so a power cut never drains your backup. A full car lasts days of normal driving anyway.

Is evforsale.co.za a dealership?+

No. We match you with a franchised dealer for the car and an accredited installer for the solar, and put both on one monthly price. You buy from them directly. It costs you nothing extra; the dealer and installer pay us.
